The Saturday Shop was first set up in the 1960's when Gerald Grimes, the founder, restored and painted old pine furniture from his small shop in Portobello Road, London.
Portobello Road had its colourful crowded market day on Saturdays so the furniture was prepared ready and the shop opened on Saturdays. Gerald's inspiration for his painted designs came from a book called The Saturday Book. This book offered artistic commentary and valuable literature about life in Britain during the Second World War, illustrated with photographs and line drawings. In 1965 Gerald's painted designs were noticed and featured in the Sunday Telegraph. An example of one of his designs is shown on the right and is now used as the company logo. The Saturday Shop has grown into a successful kitchen and furniture manufacturer and is now established in Frome. Somerset. |
